If any of you remember the old commercial for Remington Razors in which Victor Kiam says "I liked it so much I bought the company", then you will understand how we became owners at Velero Beach Resort, in our mind the best of the Cabarete hotels.
In 2006, my wife and I got married at Velero and they did such a great job on our wedding we thought we should buy a unit. Fortunately for us one of the penthouses was available and we snapped it up. In the following four years we have used it, let friends and family use it and shared it with hotel guests.
Before we closed the deal we did our research to make sure it it wasn't just our emotions leading us. We compared other islands in the Caribbean, we compared other beaches in the Dominican Republic and we compared other properties in Cabarete and it was clear that Velero was the best offering out there.
Other islands don't have the wonderful Dominican people, proud of their island and heritage and willing to go out of their way to share it with visitors. For example, when our child was born and we took her to the DR it was amazing how all the locals wanted to play with her and hold her. On one occasion the table next to us at a beach restaurant kept her at their table for our entire dinner...and she wasn't even two years old! It is so perfect for family beach vacations.
Other beaches in the DR are just not Cabarete. Cabarete burst into existence because of the favorable winds for windsurfing and now also for kitesurfing. It attracted a young, athletic, international crowd and the town is still true to those roots. Every day that there is wind these men and women put on a spectacular show on the water that we can watch from the beautiful day beds at Velero. The only problem with this is that 10 years ago when I first started going to Cabarete for 4 months at a time, I would be on the water everyday. Now, it's so comfortable to just relax at Velero and watch everybody else my windsurfing and kitesurfing gear doesn't get wet as often as it should.
Other properties in Cabarete are just not Velero. The developer told me this story: "I had a beautiful house several miles from Cabarete. But whenever someone came to visit all they wanted to do was spend their days in Cabarete. So I walked up and down the length of the beach and selected the east point of the bay as the perfect place to build a small resort. It is sheltered from the wind so you can sit on the beach without being sand blasted. It is up wind of the main town so when the lively clubs are partying until the wee hours, the music gets blown the other direction. Some of the newer high end buildings have so many beginner kitesurf lessons going on in front its not safe to sit on the beach as kites are crashing all around. The main road takes a big turn away from the beach just before it gets to Velero so there is no road noise. And yet the best supermarket in town is a one minute walk and the main center of the restaurants, windsurfing and kitesurfing schools and clubs is only a two or three minute walk along the beautiful beach. So I built Velero"
So after all that research, it turns out our gut feel was right and we have been happy ever since. Whenever I read the TripAdvisor reviews on Velero it reinforces our decision to buy here and makes me proud to help other people enjoy the Cabarete we love so much.
